We are first and foremost coaches. Direct teaching of skills is necessary, but as Paul Goodman in Growing up Absurd points out, those things we learn best we learn incidentally while doing something else. We believe, for example, one learns most life skills in the context of other activities, such as organized sports. In sports, we may use direct instruction for shooting and dribbling skills, but we coach strategy development, problem solving, conflict resolution, team work, and decision making. In the classroom, we use direct instruction to form the basic skills, but we coach students to generalize what they have learned to other contexts through games and exercises that most often don't feel like "instruction." We cannot do things for people for, if we do, we merely make them dependent on us. Rather, we must coach them in doing things for themselves, in making the right decisions, in understanding the consequences of the decisions they do make. |
